Forest Animal Prints

These new Forest Friends animal prints are now up in my Etsy shop.  I had a vision of woodland creature silhouettes when I was brainstorming ideas for my sister-in-law’s Christmas present.  I ended up printing the long “Forest Animal Parade” prints in white repeating around the edges of a cream table cloth.  My SIL loves to entertain, and I am hoping the tablecloth helps her create a welcoming atmosphere to her guests.

I think these prints would also make wonderful additions to nurseries and children’s room.  The images are playful and contain an implied narrative.  Ask yourself or your child- “Where are the animals going?  Where do they live?  Are they all friends?  Why is the Mouse riding on the Bear’s back?  Why is the porcupine bringing up the rear?”

In this version of the silhouettes the animals are jumbled, tumbling mass. What are our forest friends doing? Maybe there were all having a secret meeting and running away suddenly after human stumbled upon their hidden location.  Maybe this is the starting line of the Annual Woodland Adventure 5k.  Or maybe it’s disco night in the big clearing between the trees.

Head on over to Etsy to check them out!

So peaceful in our room.

West Coast Adventure

These photos are a very small percentage of the photos we took on our big trip to California.  We started by flying to LA for Eric’s sister Christine’s senior art show at Biola University.  The show was AMAZING.  It didn’t feel like a student show at all- I know it was loads better than my own senior show.  Christine showed her massive charcoal drawings that seemed to float on the page, and her friend Mar wove a 30 foot whale from reeds and suspended it from the ceiling.  It was crazy how well the two girls’ work complemented each other.  The space was such an inspiring place to be.  I got to help set up the show the day before it opened, and it was cool to see how the drawings transformed themselves and the gallery as we mounted them on the walls.   Big things coming from these young women.  BIG THINGS.

The day after the show opening, Eric and I rented a car and embarked on our trip up Hwy 1.  We intended to rent a Jeep Wrangler, but it occurred to us at the rental office that Wranglers don’t offer much in the way of security, and we were going to be traveling and camping with all our stuff in the car for the next week.  So we settled for a silver Mustang Convertible, no big deal.

You will note that it was December when we drove this drive, and even though it was sunny California, December is no time to be riding around in a convertible.  I spend all our driving time cocooned to the ears in our double-wide sleeping bag.

The Pacific Coast Highway (Big Sur, mostly) is one of my favorite places I’ve seen in America.  It makes me so happy to live in a country that has such diverse landscapes.  On one day of driving through Big Sur, we were completely fogged in, driving hairpin curves with sheer cliffs on our left.  We camped about 30 feet away from one such cliff, and couldn’t even see the edge of it from our tent.  I couldn’t stop noticing the color palette, so different from what I experienced growing up in rural southwest Virginia, or living in suburbia and cities in recent years.  The colors were simultaneously rich and muted- deep forest green, cream, goldenrod, and all manner of grey and brown and black contrasting with the stark white and cerulean waves.

One of the stops we made was Hearst Castle, and I’d recommend it to anyone doing a Hwy 1 road trip.  The views were spectacular, the art and architecture impressive, and the story fascinating.  What impressed me most was the indoor swimming pool, tiled in cobalt blue with gold accents.  Apparently if you’re a member of the “Friends of the Hearst” Club (aka, an important donor), you get to attend swimming parties at the swimming pool.  While we were there a toddler threw his sippy cup in the pool and the tour guides looked completely disgusted.  They had to fish it out with sticks.

Another thing that surprised me (though it shouldn’t have) was seeing citrus trees growing every where!  Lemons, limes and oranges, just growing in people’s yards.

Every time we saw a seal on the trip, Eric and I freaked out and took a million photos (and there were a lot of chances to see seals on beaches- they were about as common as deer are in the woods).  This photo was taken at San Simeon, and the beach was chock full of elephant seals.  Those little white seals are going to grow into that big fat seal, pretty incredible.

We wrapped up our trip in San Francisco, which I adored.  I finally got to eat at Tartine Bakery!  I’ve been obsessed with this place so long, and it met or exceeded every single one of my expectations.  I bought two half loaves of bread, a morning bun, brownie and most delicious of all- a banana cream tart.  Sorry, no food pics.  I don’t have as many photos from SF, because by that point in the trip we were beyond dirty and the batteries on all our devices has been dead for some time.

I will say that if you visit SF, in addition to Tartine, you really need to go to Paxton Gate and The Pirate Supply Store.  They are only a couple blocks away from Tartine, and next door to each other.  Paxton Gate is the oddest, most interesting store I’ve ever been in.  They had everything from gardening supplies and plants and terrariums, to taxidermy and things  like mummified monkey paws, to nature-themed jewelry like silver casts of beetles and rings carved from deer antlers, to art books and old maps and science posters…in other words, everything creepy and amazing.  The Pirate Supply store is the front cover for what is in fact a children’s literacy program.  But you’d never know that; they take themselves pretty seriously as “San Francisco’s only independent pirate supply store.”  The shop is full of pirate necessities like spyglasses, maps, wooden legs, mermaid repellent and lard(??).  The walls are covered in witty and snarky stories and one-liners.  A must-see.

Oh, on their website you can find a (partial) list of uses for lard.  They include: Grub cooking, Skin moisturizing, Mast Greasing, Hair Styling, Lard fights, Dog rewarding, “My Little Lard Baby,” Shark enticing, Finger nail softening, Salad Dressing (seasonal), Gift Wrap.

I think that important lard info is as good an ending to this blog post as any.

Happy New Year!

Let’s ignore the fact that it’s January 13, my New Years starts tomorrow anyway.  I’ve been putting off starting my resolutions, and I’ve decided tomorrow is the day.  It was supposed to start last Monday, but one of my resolutions includes eating healthy, and Eric and I planned a dinner date on Tuesday, so…I put it off a week.  I mean really I’ve been putting this off since Thanksgiving, every day saying with a shrug “Diet starts tomorrow!”

I’m going to try to eat mostly raw fruits and veggies- lots of salads and green smoothies.  And WAAAAY less pudding.* My immediate and extended family banded together and got me a Vitamix blender for Christmas, and I’m super pumped to start using it.  Another goal this year is to finally run a half-marathon.  (Technically, I did run one before, if by run you mean I ran four miles of the Nashville Rock n Roll half marathon and then trudged the rest of the way, running only in short spurts, being passed up even by the shirtless guy wearing jean shorts and cowboy boots and a oversize foam cowboy hat…)  The goal is to run 13.1 miles with out stopping.

I also have big goals for my artwork this year.  For some reason I’ve been shy about posting a lot of the stuff I made in the past 6 month.  I’ve posted all the new prints I put in my Etsy shop, but I’m moving away from screen printing in a lot of ways, and working in paint and ink and collage a lot more.  I’m still feeling my way, but I hope to show you a lot more of what I’ve been spending my time on.

Other resolutions include typical (for me) ones like get up earlier, less internet, less procrastinating, write more, etc.  Did you make any resolutions?

Tune in soon for posts including but not limited to:  Baton Rouge is One Soggy Mess, 500 Chilly Miles in a Convertible, and My Husband Acquires Yet Another Hobby.

I hope 2013 is our best year ever!

Love,

Mik

* Confession: out of the last few months, there has not been a single week that I did not make pudding.  Sometimes more than once.  It started with chocolate and moved onto rice and finally to more elaborate eclair pie and dirt pudding desserts.  People who don’t like pudding just BAFFLE me.

Headin’ out West!

A lot going on, folks.  This very day Eric and I are setting forth from Louisiana for an epic trip that starts in LA for Eric’s sister Christine’s senior thesis show.  I’ve been looking for something to link to, cause the art she’s showing is incredible, but I guess none of it has ventured onto the internet yet.  I’ll share some photos when we get back in town.

Our plan is to spend time with Eric’s family this weekend, then the art show on Monday, and then on Tuesday Eric and I are renting a JEEP WRANGLER yessss and driving up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco!!!!  We’ve bought a double-wide sleeping bag, and we’re camping a few nights on the way up the coast in places like Big Sur.  You may be sure that photo-ridden account of this adventure awaits you in the near future.  What am I most excited about?  Hard to say, and of course family and art time will be amazing, but right now all I can think is I’m finally going to Tartine Bakery!

Baton Rouge has really been great to me.  I got to participate in four art events in November, including an open house at the N where I rent studio space and White Light Night art walk on Government Street.  Both events were raging successes; I felt so overwhelmed with positive feedback and supportive friends.  It’s so good to see people’s reactions to the work, AND to get off the internet for awhile.  Often I feel like gettin’ BLOGGED or sellin’ on ETSY are the only indicators of progress, and it’s demoralizing when everyone who ever was awesome’s work is just a click away.  When I only pay attention to what’s happening online, it’s easy to think my work is unmemorable, but getting some exposure in real life totally gave me the burst of confidence I need.  People are so lovely here.

So much more to tell you, but now I must pack and help Eric finish up a project.  Those of you in the know may well guess what that project is.

In the meantime, enjoy some new art, and hop on over to Etsy where the pieces are available for purchase!

I made another cutaway animal- and there’s more to come!  This one is a Bird Airship, piloted and powered by little aviators.

The image measures 26″x14″ and it printed in black ink on heavy stonehenge paper.

Next I was inspired to draw my lovely kitchen aid mixer which has facilitated so many delicious baked good and frostings.  Mine is actually black, but I always wanted the pale green one, so I made this wish-fulfilling print.  I’m thinking about doing a series “mixers of the 20th century” including a hand crank whisk and others.

I really like the texture on this print, which was achieved by burning my screen in the sun with thin paper soaked with vegetable oil to make it translucent.  A new trick for me, and I love the results.

I’m off to my adventures!  Have a good week!
